Sarah and I went on holiday with Grant, Lisa, Jamie (10), Devan (7) and Macualie (5) to the place where we really learnt how to windsurf. It was a nostalgic trip as it is not a high wind centre so we weren't going to complain about the winds; but it would be good for the kids.

The first week we were taught by a very enthusiastic instructor who maintained her enthusiasm despite the lack of wind. We did a lot of freestyle and learnt a couple of new tricks. I pulled off a push-tack and a heli-tack with a pirouette. On the Saturday Grant and I went head to head in the freestyle competition (still no wind). We were given two minutes to do as many moves as possible and generally show-off just off the beach where everyone at the hotel could watch. I just started thinking about the next move all the time and didn’t worry about the one I was doing – I started with three consecutive rig-flips followed by a heli-tack, then a man and rig 360, a push-tack, etc. I just kept going with similar stuff. As I was making all my moves I tried a couple of new ones; I did a gybe on my knees, and then got my head inside the boom with my hands off. I can’t remember it all – but I just kept it going.

The second week was windier. Lisa got into her footstraps on one day and Sarah, Grant and I got planing on four days – strangely it was not when the instructor was working. Lisa’s confidence was improving but then the wind messed us up by getting too strong for all the level 2/aspiring level 3 folk. The Saturday was a race this time – which Grant won in spectacular fashion. Sarah and I had been going as hard as we could all morning – enjoying the wind and had only just got in and ordered some lunch (I was starving) and Sarah doesn’t do racing (she just doesn’t enjoy the pressure).

Jamie also did a lot of dingy sailing and got his RYA level 1.
